History In 1960 the Thor- Able was adapted for launching satellites like the TIROS weather satellite (TIROS paper model here).
TIROS I was the first successful weather satellite. It was launched on April 1, 1960 from Cape Canaveral. The satellite was the first real weather satellite and was equipped with infra-red television cameras. Sources on Thor-Able:
